Taking amitriptyline and ropinirole together can increase the risk of side effects such as extreme sleepiness, dizziness, and confusion. It may also increase the risk of 'serotonin syndrome', a rare but serious condition, and can lead to a sudden drop in blood pressure when standing up.

Why this happens
Both medications affect chemicals in the brain and have 'sedating' effects that add together. Amitriptyline can also interfere with how the liver processes ropinirole, potentially leading to higher levels of the drug in your system. Additionally, both drugs can lower blood pressure, increasing the risk of falls.
What you should do
Speak to your doctor before taking these together. If your doctor prescribes both, be very careful when performing tasks that require alertness, such as driving. Move slowly when standing up from a sitting or lying position. Seek medical help immediately if you experience high fever, muscle stiffness, or agitation.
